Terms of Use

The rules of the Atlas

Reading the Atlas is free and needs no account. These terms cover the rest: who can contribute, what happens to what you send, and what the Atlas can and cannot promise about the record.

The short version

  • The Atlas is an independent, unofficial project. It is not run by, affiliated with or endorsed by UMEA, any circuit, CompetitionSuite or any school.
  • Official results are whatever the circuit publishes. The Atlas cites them carefully but can get things wrong.
  • Contributor accounts are for people 13 and older.
  • What you contribute stays yours, but you let the Atlas publish it — and you promise it is accurate and yours to share.
  • Never post personal information about a student.

1. These terms

These terms are an agreement between you and the Marching Atlas (“the Atlas”, “we”). By using the site you agree to these terms and to the way the Privacy Policy says information is handled. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

If you are under 18, read these terms with a parent or guardian. By making an account you confirm that they are fine with you using the Atlas under these terms.

2. Not official, not affiliated

The Atlas is an independent community archive. It is not operated, sponsored or endorsed by the Utah Music Educators Association (UMEA), any other circuit or association, CompetitionSuite, or any school, district or program it lists.

Names of circuits, schools, events and organisations are used only to say which one a page is about. They and any related trademarks belong to their owners. The Atlas does not use their logos; the marks drawn beside a circuit or school are the Atlas’s own generic designs.

3. Scores and accuracy

Schedules, running orders and scores are gathered from what circuits publish, and each is linked to its source. The published source is the official record. If the Atlas and the source ever disagree, the source is right — and please tell us so the Atlas can be fixed.

The Atlas is provided “as is”, without any promise that it is complete, current or error-free. Do not rely on it alone for anything that matters — travel to an event, an eligibility question, a placement or an award. Check with the circuit.

4. Accounts

You do not need an account to read anything. You need one to suggest changes, and only people 13 or older may have one. If we learn that an account belongs to someone younger, we delete it and what it stored.

Keep your sign-in to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has used it. One person per account, and no accounts pretending to be somebody else — a director, a circuit or a school included.

5. What you contribute

When you send a correction, an addition, a photo or anything else, you promise that:

  • it is accurate as far as you know, and the source you cite says what you say it does;
  • you have the right to share it — a photo you took, or one whose licence allows it;
  • it contains no personal information about a student: no names of individual students (drum majors, soloists and section leaders included), no contact details, and no photos that single out a student without their and a parent’s permission.

You keep whatever rights you have in what you contribute. You give the Atlas a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to use, copy, edit, adapt, publish and display it as part of the Atlas and its promotion, and to let others do the same under the licence the Atlas later publishes its data under, if it does. The licence is perpetual because the archive keeps its history: a merged correction stays on the record even if your account is deleted, though your name comes off it.

Facts — a score, a date, the name of a show — belong to nobody, and the Atlas may record them whoever sends them in.

6. Review and removal

Every contribution is reviewed before it reaches the record, and moderators may accept, edit or decline it without giving a reason. We may remove anything from the Atlas, and suspend or close an account, if we believe it breaks these terms, puts somebody at risk, or has to come down for legal reasons.

7. Acceptable use

Please do not:

  • submit results or information you know are false, or anything meant to mislead;
  • harass, threaten or mock anyone — students, staff, judges or other contributors;
  • post anybody’s personal information, or anything that is not yours to share;
  • scrape or query the site so fast that it slows down for everyone else, or try to get round the limits that protect it;
  • try to break into accounts, the moderation tools or the database, or upload anything harmful;
  • use the Atlas for anything unlawful.

8. The Atlas's own content, and other people's

The Atlas’s writing, design and code are its own. Photographs belong to their creators and are shown under the licence named beside each one, with a link to its source; follow that licence if you reuse one. Scores and schedules are cited to the circuit that published them.

The Atlas links to other sites — circuits, recap pages, schools, Instagram, Buy Me a Coffee. We are not responsible for them, and their own terms apply once you are there.

9. Copyright and takedown requests

If something on the Atlas uses your work without permission, or you want something about you or your student taken down, send a request through Contact support and choose “Copyright or takedown”. For a copyright notice, please include:

  • the work you believe is being copied, and the page on the Atlas where it appears;
  • how to reach you;
  • a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law;
  • a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for them;
  • your full name as your signature.

We take the material down while we look into it. Requests to remove a student’s name or picture are handled first, and do not need any of the above.

10. Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the Atlas and the people who run it are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, or from relying on anything published on it. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to US$50. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

11. Changes, and the law that applies

We may update these terms. When we do, the date below moves, and a change to what you have agreed to is announced on the site before it takes effect. Using the Atlas after that means you accept the new version.

The law that governs these terms, and where any dispute would be heard, has not been set yet. It will be named here before the Atlas asks anybody to agree to anything that depends on it.

12. Questions

Anything about these terms goes through Contact support. The About page says what the Atlas is and how it works.
